Mar 20, 2013 - N.C. regulators have approved Duke Energy Renewables' plan to build a 20-megawatt solar farm at the Warren Field Airport in Beaufort County.

It would be Duke Renewables' largest solar project to date. The unregulated subsidiary of Duke Energy Corp. plans to sell the 36,000 kilowatt hours of electricity the project is expected to produce annually to the N.C. ElecrtiCities through the town of Washington's municipal power company.

Duke Renewables has not disclosed the cost of the project. But based on the prices Duke has disclosed for smaller projects and general costs companies have been reporting for N.C. solar projects, it is likely to be in the range of $60 million.

The N.C. Utilities Commission approved the project Monday, along with plans for a 15-megawatt project that Element Power of Oregon also plans to build in Beaufort County. The latter was scaled down from an original proposal for a 40-megawatt project. Element already has gotten approval to build a 40-megawatt project in Union County, but it hasn't yet started work on any project in North Carolina.

Duke Renewables has completed a 12.5-megawatt solar project in the city of Bath, which was built by Mooresville-based SunEnergy1. It has applied with the utilities commission to expand that to a 20-megawatt project.
