SOLON Energy GmbH has been awarded the contract to build a photovoltaic power plant with a total capacity of 2MW on an abandoned landfill in Jena-Ilmnitz (Thuringia). At the behest of the city of Jena, SOLON is planning the power plant, installing it so that it is ready to use, and is also responsible for commissioning it. The investment amounts to around four million euros, including the development of the land and of the project.

The plant is being built on an area of about four hectares; 8,360 polycrystalline solar modules with fixed mountings will be used. The yield can provide up to 1,400 households in Jena with electricity generated in a climate-friendly manner.

"Like the city of Jena, more and more communities are taking control of the energy revolution themselves," says Dr. Lars Podlowski, managing director of SOLON Energy GmbH. "Solar power is particularly suitable for this. The plants can be installed quickly, and unused areas such as large roofs or landfills can be used sensibly and profitably."
